Kimberly Brown - Bio

Kimberly Brown’s musical journey began much like that of many women an innate love of music and an awareness of its presence in daily life.

In a home filled with musical styles ranging from her parents’ Country and Western to her brother’s Beatles records, what little girl wouldn’t find herself standing in front of her mirror (hairbrush/microphone in hand) singing her heart out.

At 12, the gift of a classical guitar from her brother gave her an initial attempt at her budding musicianship, but the fit just wasn’t quite right.  From there she went on to play the trumpet for years and even dabbled at the piano for a while, yet something was missing.  Finally she started singing and it was then that she realized that her voice was truly the instrument she was meant to use.

Finally on her true path, she set out to be a singer/songwriter.  Before even attempting her first open mic performance, Kimberly had taken to songwriting with a fervor and ability it takes years to develop.  Working in coordination with a parody theatre company in Atlanta she co-wrote a musical score for their spring production.  With much support from friends and loved ones, she dove into songwriting and began to pour her life into her music.

Her first solo gig in Atlanta paid a whopping $20 (plus tips!), but she was determined to keep getting out there and sharing her music whenever and wherever she could.  She returned home to Knoxville, TN and began appearing at open mics hosted by local musicians and celebrities.  Soon the gigs started coming.

To see this musician in a live performance will affect you.  Along her musical journey life has happened – a lot.  Her losses and challenges are transparent layers of lyric and music.  Her voice evokes exactly what she intends, a direct and sympathetic experience with her audience.  Her performance is a presence laid bare – her stories and images tangible.

Now she is also the lead singer for Crossroads – a progressive blues band.  This has given her the opportunity to set free that power behind her voice that has been so well controlled in her solo performances, but never fully exercised.  This band is stacked with gifted musicians who love what they do, and it provides the perfect environment for Kimberly’s powerful vocals.

If you haven’t heard her live, you are missing a truly unique experience.  Music should touch you even when you think you’ve gone numb.  It should move you and take you to places you hadn’t planned on going.  Kimberly’s music is a journey worth taking.
